Orbital Data Centers: Moving Compute to Space
Discussion is turning to the idea of placing data centers in orbit, shifting energy-hungry computing infrastructure off Earth. Proponents argue space offers continuous solar power and easier cooling, while questions remain over launch costs, maintenance, latency and regulatory oversight. With growing scrutiny of terrestrial data centers' energy demands, the concept is drawing attention from space and telecom policy circles.
Why now: Rising demand for AI compute and concern over data center energy use are pushing space-based computing into policy and industry debate.
