Orbital Data Centers: Moving Compute to Space
Orbital data centers, the idea of placing computing and data storage infrastructure in space, are drawing attention as a possible next step beyond terrestrial cloud facilities. The concept promises abundant solar power and natural cooling, but raises questions about launch costs, latency, radiation and space debris. Space policy watchers are debating whether orbit could realistically host large-scale compute.
Why now: Growing interest in space infrastructure and the rising energy demands of AI data centers are driving discussion of computing in orbit.
