Original: bremen
A couple was assaulted by a group in Bremen following Germany's Unity Day celebrations, in what is being described as a homophobic attack. The incident drew regional and national attention, coinciding with official festivities in the city where President Frank-Walter Steinmeier warned of threats to democracy, saying the day is about the self-assertion of democratic values. Local outlets also covered a five-car crash on the A1 motorway.
Why now: The violent attack coincided with the Day of German Unity celebrations held in Bremen, making local and national news collide in one story.
