Original: UN experts call on Pakistan to release human rights lawyers rearrested on terrorism charges
United Nations human rights experts have called on Pakistan to release human rights lawyers who were rearrested on terrorism charges shortly after being detained. The experts say the arrests appear intended to punish lawyers for their legitimate human rights work and are urging the authorities to drop the charges and guarantee due process. The appeal puts fresh international pressure on Pakistan over its treatment of legal defenders.
Why now: Renewed detention of rights lawyers on terrorism charges has drawn direct criticism from UN experts, prompting international attention.
