Calls to expel Roma accused of theft spark outrage in Venice
Original: Gypsies who steal in Venice are marked with red paint. Send them back.
A widely shared post claims Roma people who steal in Venice are being marked with red paint and demands they be sent back. No official confirmation of the marking practice has emerged, but the message has drawn heavy engagement and revived debate in Italy over anti-Roma rhetoric, vigilantism and how authorities should handle street crime in Venice's tourist areas.
Why now: The inflammatory claim about marking an ethnic group with red paint is spreading rapidly amid ongoing tension over migration and street crime in Italian cities.
