TikTok's Alabama Settlement May Require Age Checks for All Users
Original: TikTok’s Alabama Settlement May Require Age Checks for All Users
TikTok has reached a settlement with the US state of Alabama that could require the platform to verify the ages of all users, not just those suspected of being minors. Age-verification mandates have become a flashpoint in US tech regulation, raising concerns about privacy and how platforms would collect identity documents from millions of users. Details of the settlement's exact terms remain limited.
Why now: Regulators and privacy advocates are watching closely because a blanket age-check requirement could set a precedent for other US states.
