Original: Andy Burnham floats possibility of rejoining EU or its customs union
Greater Manchester Mayor and senior Labour figure Andy Burnham has raised the possibility of the UK rejoining the European Union or at least joining its customs union. The comments, which put him at odds with the government's current post-Brexit stance, are drawing attention as a potential shift in the debate over Britain's future relationship with Europe.
Why now: A prominent Labour politician publicly reopening the Brexit debate challenges official party policy and fuels speculation about his leadership ambitions.
