Great Lakes lawmakers warn carp barrier delays threaten ecosystems
Original: Great Lakes lawmakers say delays on invasive carp barrier threaten ecosystems, economy
Lawmakers from the Great Lakes region say ongoing delays in building a barrier against invasive carp are putting both the lakes' ecosystems and the regional economy at risk. They argue the fish, if they reach the Great Lakes, could devastate native species and the fishing and tourism industries that depend on them, and are pressing for the project to move forward without further postponement.
Why now: Fresh concern over invasive carp spreading toward the Great Lakes has put pressure on officials to speed up barrier construction.
