Berlin marks Unity Day amid Gaza protest controversy
Original: Berlin forgets the black-red-gold for Unity Day, but not the Gaza demo
Commentary from Germany accuses Berlin of skipping traditional black-red-gold displays for German Unity Day while permitting a large pro-Palestinian demonstration in the capital. Critics say the city prioritised the Gaza protest over national celebration, fuelling debate about patriotism, public order and how German authorities handle Middle East-related demonstrations on a day meant to commemorate reunification.
Why now: Ongoing Gaza war protests in Germany are clashing with national symbols and holidays, drawing strong reactions.
