Darfur

The International Organization for Migration reports that displaced people from Sudan's Darfur region are crossing the border into Chad to escape ongoing fighting. The agency also recorded the displacement of more than two thousand people from El Fasher toward Tawila in recent days, driven by deteriorating security conditions in the area.

At least 35 people were killed in Darfur, Sudan, when a drone attack hit a gathering at a courthouse. A rights group has blamed the army for the strike, which struck as people were assembled for a court session. The attack adds to the heavy civilian toll from Sudan's ongoing war and is drawing condemnation and renewed calls for accountability.

The arms embargo on Darfur is set to lapse on Saturday unless the UN Security Council agrees to extend it. Commentators warn that letting it expire would benefit the Rapid Support Forces, the militia fighting Sudan's army, and point to the role of the United Arab Emirates and regional actors including Libya, Colombia and Puntland in the war's supply chains. German-language debate is focused on whether the Council will act in time.
