It then converts into a sailboat, steering with a fish-like rudder. The design uses just three actuators and three sensors, drawing attention for its multi-modal mobility.","why":"The unusual combination of falling, self-braking and transforming into a sailboat makes it a striking robotics demonstration.","tone":"positive","entities":["ALBATROSS","Singapore"],"summarized_at":"2026-10-01T23:12:58.462987Z","meta":{"tag":"robotics","via":"scan","kind":"status","lang":"en","instance":"mastodon.social","tag_uses":30},"nw":null,"promo":null,"kind":null,"importance":null,"hidden":false,"hide_reason":null,"judged_at":null,"title_en":"Singapore engineers build transforming drone-dropped robot ALBATROSS","section_name":"Technology","category_name":"Robotics","timeline":[{"captured_at":"2026-10-01T23:12:17.177543Z","rank":1,"volume":4},{"captured_at":"2026-10-01T23:14:16.768193Z","rank":2,"volume":4},{"captured_at":"2026-10-02T00:34:17.754087Z","rank":1,"volume":4},{"captured_at":"2026-10-02T01:56:19.118279Z","rank":1,"volume":4},{"captured_at":"2026-10-02T03:21:46.713332Z","rank":1,"volume":4}],"posts":[{"platform":"mastodon","url":"https://fediscience.org/@tksst/117368016213460959","author":"tksst@fediscience.org","title":null,"snippet":"🤖 NEW: Engineers in # Singapore built # ALBATROSS , a roughly 1 kg # robot that falls from a # drone at about 150 m, spins its limbs to slow the descent from around 110 to 24 km/h, then converts into a # sailboat with a # fish -like rudder.
