Drained peat soil used for conventional farming oxidises and causes land subsidence; growing rice in wet conditions could keep peat saturated and slow the sinking, while giving farmers a viable alternative crop. The experiment is drawing attention as a novel approach to a longstanding Dutch land-management problem.","why":"It is an unusual climate adaptation trial in a country known for dairy on peat, and it offers a potential model for peatland loss elsewhere.","tone":"neutral","entities":["Netherlands","rice","peatlands"],"summarized_at":"2026-10-01T08:17:02.541761Z","meta":{"via":"scan","lang":"en","term":"climate change","source":"afp.com","published":"Thu, 01 Oct 2026 03:02:10 GMT"},"nw":null,"promo":null,"kind":null,"importance":null,"hidden":false,"hide_reason":null,"judged_at":null,"title_en":"Dutch trial rice farming to save sinking peatlands","section_name":"Environment","category_name":"Climate","timeline":[{"captured_at":"2026-10-01T08:16:18.030009Z","rank":25,"volume":null}],"posts":[{"platform":"news","url":"https://news.google.com/rss/articles/CBMigAFBVV95cUxPZVpjU0FWYXd0ajQ3UVMyU0hta2FHMXVOR0c5Y3hrQkFjZFRHUlkyMG5EQTJYS3gtUW9PQTlQNVFLcTl6bEdpbnZXQS11cG5fUkt5U3UtSXgtLWdoU3hHWFBTUElIYmQ0enRsY2FIczNHa01ya3NsQXVLRXdXS3BWTw?oc=5","author":"afp.com","title":"Rice work: Dutch test new crop to save sinking peatlands","snippet":null,"posted_at":"2026-10-01T03:02:10Z","likes":null}],"elsewhere":[],"window":"7d"}}
