In both cases, patterns moving in one direction can appear to shift the opposite way, a property tied to the microscopic structure of wing scales and the geometry of the striped pole, with implications for studying optics and perception in biology.","why":"A new science article draws a surprising optical link between insect coloration and a familiar everyday illusion.","tone":"neutral","entities":["Ars Technica","butterflies"],"summarized_at":"2026-09-30T15:47:06.902545Z","meta":{"tag":"science","via":"scan","kind":"status","lang":"en","instance":"mastodon.social","tag_uses":638},"nw":null,"promo":null,"kind":null,"importance":null,"hidden":false,"hide_reason":null,"judged_at":null,"title_en":"Butterfly wings share a trick with barbershop poles","section_name":"Science","category_name":"Science","timeline":[{"captured_at":"2026-09-30T15:44:46.990422Z","rank":6,"volume":2}],"posts":[{"platform":"mastodon","url":"https://arstechnica.com/science/2026/09/what-butterfly-wings-have-in-common-with-barbershop-poles/","author":"ars_technica@robot.villas","title":null,"snippet":"What butterfly wings have in common with barbershop poles https://arstechnica.com/science/2026/09/what-butterfly-wings-have-in-common-with-barbershop-poles/ # Science # Biology # Optics","posted_at":"2026-09-30T15:00:56Z","likes":2}],"elsewhere":[],"window":"7d"}}
