Researchers report that a quantum memory has stored single photons for a record length of time, a result being described as a major step toward building a quantum internet. Such memories are needed to link quantum computers and send unbreakable encrypted signals over long distances, since quantum information is normally lost within fractions of a second. The record storage time suggests networking quantum devices is becoming technically feasible.
