The European Space Agency has announced that science operations have officially begun for its Smile mission, the Solar wind Magnetosphere Ionosphere Link Explorer. The spacecraft, developed jointly with the Chinese Academy of Sciences, is designed to study the interaction between the solar wind and Earth's magnetic field, capturing first images of the magnetosphere's bow shock and auroras from a unique vantage point.
