Prevent duty

On September 26, 1983, Soviet lieutenant colonel Stanislav Petrov was on duty at a missile warning centre near Moscow when the system falsely reported incoming American nuclear missiles. He judged the alert to be a malfunction and did not report it as an attack, a decision widely credited with preventing a retaliatory strike and possible nuclear war.
