Android Developer Verification Program

Google's Android Developer Verification Program is drawing sharp criticism from developers, who argue the requirement to register and verify developer identity will undermine the openness of the platform. Critics say it will restrict sideloading and independent app distribution, hitting hobbyists, privacy-focused developers, and users in regions without official app store access, and they fear it sets a precedent similar to Apple's locked-down model.

Developers and privacy advocates are pushing back against Google's Android Developer Verification Program, a plan requiring all app developers to verify their identity with Google even for apps distributed outside the Play Store. Critics argue it effectively turns Android into a gated platform, undermining sideloading and open distribution, and some are voicing their opposition in blunt terms.
